![]() The tower isn't as high as the others and you only go up there to get a view of the mountain ranges and a bit of the nearby city towers. I do understand though why it may not be so popular. I was very glad to have seen such a clear view of this today. I had gone to Mount Rainier National Park for some hiking a few days beforehand and it was foggy and I didn't get to see the mountain on the drive up and back. The views of the Cascade Mountains and Mount Rainier were so clear and beautiful. It was so very peaceful and it was a lovely day. It was very quiet and I only saw two other people during my visit up there. I was in the area and had some spare time and decided to go up and I am very glad I did. People seem to sway towards the Space Needle and to the Columbia Centre. When I was doing my Seattle sightseeing research, this was not originally on my list as it wasn't very popular with people and no one seemed to really recommend it. They opened at 11am and I arrived around 1pm and they told me I was the first person to go up to the Observatory. ![]() Our wives had to sit in it, but I don't think it provides retro-luck after 30 years of marriage. Another attraction is a beautiful carved wooden chair that is supposed to be a lucky engagement chair. The decor is interesting in Asian Pacific theme, but it adds to the uniqueness of the space. It opens at 3:00 PM, so it is perfect for afternoon drinks and a snack. The food was good, and while strange to pay to go to a restaurant, I saw it more as the price of the view. Despite the bars, I really like being able to go outside and walk around for your view of the city.įinally, we ate a sandwich and had a couple of drinks here. While the Columbia Center may be a better view, I loved the Smith Tower for its history. I will say that I think the view at the Space Needle is better, partly location and partly height. You also get great views of the tallest building in the city, the Columbia Center, as well as the Seattle Wheel and both stadiums. Unfortunately, by the time we got there the haze had built up and you could not see Rainer, but you could still make out the Olympics across the Sound. It does offer great views of the city and Puget Sound as well as the two stadiums. Nothing surpassed it in Seattle until the Space Needle in the 1960s. This was the tallest building west of the Mississippi when built and for many decades the tallest building in the West. For me the building is very interesting with its gothic skyscraper architecture with detail decoration and tower like a miniature Woolworth Building. I love historic places and I love heights that give you a view, so this was a natural for us. We met our friends here for a late lunch and drinks while checking out the view. And don't forget to make a wish in the Wishing Chair. This is the first real thing we did in Seattle after landing and checking in our hotel. Then take a moment to indulge in Prohibition-era inspired craft cocktails and shareable plates with a group of friends or your loved ones. Make your way to the top of the tower for an amazing vantage point from the Observatory, including an open-air deck with 360-degree views of Seattle and beyond. Immerse yourself in new exhibits that take you on a journey through the past one hundred years.
